'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' actors face challenge of keeping careers magical

This was one time Tom Felton, one of the stars of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," could have really used a spell of protection.
Chauffeured to a recent appearance at a store opening, the 21-year-old actor found a throng of jubilant admirers waiting for him.
"We felt like the Beatles because there were people cheering," says Felton, who is still sporting his dyed blond locks from his turn as the dastardly Draco Malfoy. "We thought we would put the window down and be like, 'Hi, it's nice to see you.'
"We put the window down, this woman reached right in and grabbed my hair," he says, reenacting his squirming under the fan's grasp. "'Pull the window up, pull the window up!'"

Welcome to life for a student of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where the young actors are learning the pressures of a franchise that has earned almost $4.5 billion at the box office worldwide.

But with the sixth installment of the franchise hitting theaters and the last two movies currently being filmed simultaneously, a major crossroads is looming for the franchise's young actors. Will there be enough magic left in their careers after Harry Potter?

"The success that they've had in the eight years would make an entire career for most people, but they've turned into really good actors over the course of the last few years and hopefully that ability will help them transcend these roles," says Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com.

But the movie industry is littered with the wreckage of the careers of former child actors that couldn't make the transition into adult roles. For every Jodie Foster, there are a dozen Lindsay Lohans and Macaulay Culkins.

"They're waiting for you to become the stereotypical child actor and go off the wheels a bit," says "Potter" veteran Rupert Grint, 20. "But I'm not planning on it. We're too busy to go too crazy, anyway, because we're filming most of the year."

The films' young stars also have one major advantage over child actors past: They're working with a cast heavy on award-winning British veterans like Alan Rickman and Dame Maggie Smith. Harry himself, Daniel Radcliffe, said he agreed to take on his gutsy role in "Equus" on castmate Kenneth Branagh's recommendation.

"Can you imagine how intimidating that must have been for them when they were starting out," says director David Yates. "By osmosis, they've probably been picking up so much, because the only actors they've ever worked with are these incredible veterans who are the best at what they do."

Harry Potter' star Emma Watson teams up with Marilyn Manson for movie musical 'Cinderella' - report

Emma Watson is taking the next step in her fairy-tale career.

The actress is taking on another role based on a story for young people as the lead in a new film version of "Cinderella," Perez Hilton reports.

Lest anyone think Watson's all sugar and spice, the consummate good girl in the "Harry Potter" movies is teaming up with an extremely naughty boy for the project - though sometimes it's hard to tell whether he's a boy or a girl.

Watson will be working with Goth shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, British paper The Sun first reported on Tuesday.

Manson is producing the film, though it's unclear if he will also direct or write songs for the as-yet-untitled project, Hilton reports.

Watson will sing as well as act in her first major non-Harry Potter role (she previously leant her voice to the animated "Tales of Despereaux," and appeared in the TV film "Ballet Shoes") .

The actress, who's already showed off her more sophisticated side in British Elle and as a spokesmodel for Burberry, clearly isn't afraid to take a few risks.

Emma Watson eyes end of 'Harry Potter' stint and move from Hogwarts to Ivy League
By Ethan Sacks

For most 19-year-olds, deciding to attend college is a normal rite of passage. But Emma Watson hasn't lived anything close to a normal life since she was cast as Harry Potter's friend Hermione Granger at the ripe old age of 9.

Image

Quicker than one could say "Expecto patronum!," her life was magically transformed into a decade-long succession of grueling days on movie sets, screaming fans and the constant glare of paparazzi flashes. Just how far removed she is from normality became apparent last week after news that Watson was taking a break from acting to attend an Ivy League college in the United States ignited a worldwide flurry of gossip headlines.

"I really hope [her roommate] is a massive Harry Potter fan," quipped her co-star Daniel Radcliffe during a press conference for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth installment in the franchise, opening Wednesday. "I really hope you walk in and see your face on a duvet."

Watson, who wouldn't confirm rumors she'd be attending Columbia or Brown, has an entirely different vision of her future.

A lot of people are wondering why you would want to give up what seems like a glamorous lifestyle for a college dorm ...

It must appear super-glamorous, and there are certainly moments like this week when it is glamorous. But 90% of the time it's not so glamorous. Maybe it's just like the grass is always greener. But normal things just sound so appealing right now. Just normal stuff. So I think I am [ready]. I'd probably be naive if I didn't think it would take me a little while to adjust, because I've lived quite a strange life up until now. But, I think I'm still in touch with normality and reality enough, I hope, for it not to be too devastating.

What are you looking to get out of going to a university
?

I think university, the college experience, just sounds so great. I just don't want to miss out on it. I think it's a great time to make friends. I think it's a great time to figure out who you are and what you like. ... And I think as an actress when you portray a million different types of people from a million different backgrounds ... if I've lived my whole life on film sets and on red carpets, how am I meant to portray someone who has a normal life?

If you were to leave this hotel right now and walk a block in any direction, how far would you get before you were mobbed or photographed?

If I wanted to leave this hotel I would go with Denise (my security guard) now and we would try to leave the hotel through the underground passage. We would try to use a car that had a number plate that the paparazzi hadn't already [seen], so we're swapping cars. I would probably have someone with me the whole time. There are a million life-size posters of me out there and billboards and everything. I was on the "Today" show this morning. There's no chance of me being able to walk down the street with all that going on.

Emma Watson and Rupert Grint dish on 'Harry Potter' kiss
BY Joanna Sloame

Saving the wizarding realm is a breeze compared to navigating the world teen romance.

“Harry Potter” stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are used to the pressure of being a part of a internationally beloved franchise, but they’re now facing their most nerve-wracking challenge yet: an on-screen kiss.

The highly anticipated kiss between Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley takes place in the seventh and last book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” in J.K. Rowling’s hugely popular series.

While in New York promoting the sixth film, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” 19-year-old Watson announced that the snogging scene was filmed only two weeks ago.

As she and Grint, who are good friends off-screen, looked at each other sheepishly, she explained, “Rupert and I were quite nervous that it might look ingenuous as we were so desperate to get it over with. Rupert and I felt the pressure of this kiss, there’s so much interest.”

“It’s not something we were really looking forward to,” 20-year-old Grint agreed. “It was quite a strange thing to have to think about doing.” The young stars recognize that this is the romantic moment the characters, and fans, have been waiting years for.

“This is ten years worth of tension and hormones and chemistry and everything one moment. We had to ace it,” Watson said, “Kissing is awkward, kissing is always awkward.”

The lengthy concluding novel will be split in two films, tentatively slated for late 2010 and summer 2011, but it is still unclear in which movie the Hermione-Ron kiss will take place.

But that doesn’t mean die-hard Harry Potter fans aren’t anxiously awaiting the scene.

A Fandango.com poll found that 59 percent of fans said the on-screen kiss they most want a sneak-peek at is between Hermione and Ron. Only 40 percent chose the kiss between Harry, played by Daniel Radcliffe, and Ron’s sister Ginny Weasley, played by Bonnie Wright, which takes place in the upcoming “Half-Blood Prince.”

Radcliffe, 19, apologized for his kissing skills, or lack thereof, saying, “I saw the film again a couple of nights ago at the premiere and … my God, my lips are like the lips of a horse, kind of distending independently away from my face and trying to encompass the lower half of hers.”

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” is out in theaters on July 15.

Daniel Radcliffe: Better off lusting after Rob Pattinson
BY Joanna Sloame
DAILY NEWS WRITER

Vampire vs. wizard, who’s sexier? Daniel Radcliffe says Robert Pattinson, fangs down.

You won’t see Daniel Radcliffe and Robert Pattinson in a sex-symbol showdown anytime soon – the “Harry Potter” star has already admitted defeat.

"Rob Pattinson is a sex symbol. Rob Pattinson is a genuine sexy guy. He's got the height," Radcliffe told Usmagazine.com Thursday at the NYC premiere of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

"If girls like short and nerdy, then I'm a sex symbol!" he said.

Pattinson got his big break as Hogwarts hottie and Harry’s romantic rival for Cho Chang’s heart, Cedric Diggory in “the Goblet of Fire” and “Order of the Phoenix.”

"I've said probably three words to him in the last three years and that was before Twilight all kicked off," Radcliffe said. "But I wish him well. Hopefully, I'll see him at some point. He's bound to turn up at one of these [premieres] at some point."

When it comes to his own love life, Radcliffe tries to keep a low profile. "As a romantic leading man, I try to keep my personal life as far removed from the film as possible," he said.

But the 19-year-old is still a romantic at heart.

"I suppose I am fairly romantic in my own life," he said. "You know, I like to think I am. Maybe ex-girlfriends might disagree with me!”

The young actor takes an old-fashioned approach to courtship, saying, "It's always really long and involved. It involves a trail of notes!"

Emma Watson on Letterman: 'At least I wore underwear!'
BY Joanna Sloame

“Harry Potter” actress Emma Watson caused a stir at a recent event for the latest wizard flick when a gust of wind blew up her skirt, exposing the young star’s skivvies.

But much like her onscreen alter-ego Hermione Granger – Watson is staying calm and collected over the Marilyn Monroe-esque incident.

“At least I’m wearing underwear,” she said in an appearance on the “Late Show with David Letterman.”

And it’s not a bad retort considering the number of young Hollywood starlets who have been photographed sans such undergarments.

Watson, 19, recounted the event and told Letterman she’s "still learning" how to survive the red carpet.

She’s just relieved the incident wasn’t any worse, calling her runaway skirt, "a small wardrobe malfunction that happens."

Listen up, American boys! 'Harry Potter' star Emma Watson is coming to the States for college
by Amy Eisinger

Sorry, men of New York, you won't be able to work your magic moves on Emma Watson this fall!

The actress appeared on the "Late Show with David Letterman" Wednesday to promote her newest flick, "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince," and discussed her plans for attending school in the States.

When Letterman asked the actress about college, Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the popular series, confirmed she would be coming to the U.S. this fall, but did not specify where.

Previous reports said Watson would be attending Columbia University in the fall, however her co-star Daniel Radcliffe recently revealed to the U.K.'s Guardian that the actress is enrolled at Brown University.

Watson, 19, says she is planning to study for a liberal arts degree, perhaps concentrating in English, Art or something else.

"This is one of the reasons that I've come to the States, because I'm young and indecisive, and I'm not quite sure what I want to major in," Watson said.

At least one thing is certain: Watson wants to continue her career as an actress.

Aside from acting, the young stunner was recently named the new face for Chanel and has definitely turned a few heads in the fashion world.

Last night on Letterman, the actress donned a subdued cream and black dress from designer Christopher Kane’s Fall 2009 ready-to-wear line and a sky-high pair of platforms from Charlotte Olympia.

That might have been a wise choice since Watson experienced a slight wardrobe malfunction as she graced the red carpet for the London premiere of "Harry Potter" on Tuesday.

As she and the rest of the cast walked the red carpet in a downpour, she attempted to adjust her dress, inadvertently putting her underwear on display.

Watson, who was wearing a free flowing 1970s Ossie Clark gown, simply laughed off the incident on Letterman.

"At least I'm wearing underwear," she said to the host.

When the audience laughed, Watson leaned forward with her head in her hands and said, "I'm still learning, I'm still learning!"

Actor Rupert Grint - 'Harry Potter's' Ron Weasley - recovering from swine flu, rep says

Even wizards can catch the swine flu.

Harry Potter star Rupert Grint is recovering from a "mild bout" of the H1N1 virus, his publicist said Saturday.

The 20-year-old, who plays Harry Potter's best friend Ron Weasley, had to take a few days off filming the latest hocus pocus flick after falling ill.

But the young wizard is now over his coughing spell and fit enough to return to the set of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

Grint will also able to walk the red carpet in London Tuesday at the world premier of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's hit books.

"It has just been confirmed that Rupert Grint has taken a few days out of filming due to a mild bout of swine flu," his publicist said in a statement.

"He has now recovered and is looking forward to joining his fellow cast members at the junket and premieres this week and will then return to filming directly afterwards."

"Other scenes were shot in his absence which did not require his involvement and thus filming was not disrupted," the publicist added.

Grint went back to work after his doctor confirmed the young actor is no longer contagious. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" opens in most of Europe on July 15 and in the U.S. and Japan two days later.

Britain has had four swine flu-related deaths and has 7,500 reported cases - the highest in Europe.

Robert Pattinson hit by a taxi while running away from fans

Robert Pattinson on location for "Remember Me" on the streets of Manhattan on June 15, 2009.

Tween girls across the planet can breathe a big sigh of relief: "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson was unhurt after being clipped by a cab Thursday in Manhattan.

The dreamboat actor was barely grazed, a representative told the Daily News.

RadarOnline.com reported that Pattinson, 23, was hit while fleeing teen fans in front of the famous Strand bookstore on Broadway at 12th St.

The London-born model and actor - a tween phenom for his portrayal of romantic 108-year-old vampire Edward Cullen in "Twilight" - had been inside filming his new movie "Remember Me."

Trying to duck a crowd of screaming teen girls waiting on the rainy sidewalk, he ran across the street for his trailer when a taxi grazed his hip, RadarOnline said.

Pattinson reportedly stood still for a moment, appearing stunned, as a bodyguard yelled at the girls: "You see what you did, you almost killed him!"

"The reports are exaggerated," said Vivian Mayer, a spokeswoman for the film production company.

"It was not caused by his fans. Production continues."

The new film co-stars Emilie de Ravin, the Australian actress who plays Claire on "Lost."

Pattinson, who was just dubbed "Most Handsome Man in the World" by a landslide vote in a Vanity Fair online poll, has been mobbed all over town during filming.

Fans using Twitter to pinpoint his location swarmed him Monday. He had to be rescued by bodyguards who pulled girls off him.

The situation is so dire that teen fan magazine J-14 launched an online petition Thursday to "protect Rob Pattinson!"

"We know, we wish we could spend every moment with Rob - and knowing where he is at all times definitely makes it feel that way. But there is a point where it goes too far," the magazine said.

"Let's all bond together to protect Rob."
